WChE Life Hacks - Applying to College and Viterbi
Ready to apply to college?

Best of luck! College applications can be rough, but hopefully these general resources are helpful.

  • First, Khan Academy has a great suggested timeline for applying to college.
  • It can be helpful to organize all of the information you’re looking at in one place. The Scholarship System has tips on building a college comparison spreadsheet.
  • College Express has comprehensive advice on how to narrow down your college source.

If there’s any other resources you’d like to see, or if you’d like more specific advice, feel free to reach out and ask!
Thinking about chemical engineering?
MIT lists some great general reasons for
why chemical engineering is a fantastic major!

If you’d like to speak to a chemical engineering student about the program, here are some potential questions to ask:
  • What is the chemical engineering course load like?
  • What kinds of research labs and internships do students participate in?
  • What kinds of chemical engineering extracurriculars are available on campus?
  • USC has clubs like AICHE, Chem-E Car, Solar Car, WIE, and WChE. Ask about any of these or any others.

For insight into the lives of undergraduate engineers, check out the
Viterbi Voices blog posts and podcast.

For insight into the lives of chemical engineers specifically, check out our Voices of MFD
pages.

The chemical engineering (CHE) department at USC is also referred to as the Mork Family Department (MFD), or simply Mork, thanks to sponsor John Mork. MFD is under the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, which admitted 47% female students to the incoming 2020 class and has a robust Women in Engineering Program!

Consider applying to USC!

You can virtually visit and chat with USC students! Each department has specific resources; two are linked below.
  • Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences
  • Viterbi School of Engineering

Some general questions:
  • Why did you choose this school?
  • What do you do when you’re not in class? (extracurriculars, social activities, etc.)
  • How has the university supported you in opportunities like work study / research / study abroad / internships?

On top of the application deadline, make sure to pay attention to the scholarship deadline. Submitting a blanket application by the deadline will put you in the running for multiple scholarship opportunities - for example, if you apply to the Viterbi School of Engineering, this puts you in the running for potential selection as a Viterbi Fellow.
