Finding a Research Lab
Asking for Research:
Cold-emailing research professors can be intimidating! Here's a list of components to include in your first email to a professor you'd like to work for: Name, major, year

Dear Professor ____,
My name is Tina Trojan. I am a freshman studying Chemical Engineering with an emphasis in Materials Science. I have read through the research available on your website and I am very intrigued by the work you and your lab are doing, especially relating to _____. I personally am very interested in the synthesis and development of materials for a wide range of applications, especially environmental.
While my research experience is limited, I am enthusiastic about lab work and have relevant lab experience from my freshman chemistry classes. I am driven to learn and excited to practice these skills in a new setting. I would be thrilled to work in your lab this semester if you have room for another student. Please let me know whether that is a possibility, and I hope to hear from soon!
Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
Best,
Tina Trojan

Dear Professor ____,
My name is Tina Trojan. I am a rising junior studying Chemical Engineering, and I am very interested in working in your lab.
For the past two years, I have worked under Dr. ___ in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. During my sophomore year, (details about what work I did in this lab). I greatly enjoy lab work and had a wonderful experience in leadership positions in Dr. ____'s lab. This summer, I am interned at ____. I am excited to get to explore a new area of chemical engineering applications there.
This spring, I completed my course on chemical engineering separations. At the end of the course, we spent a few weeks discussing membrane separations and their incredibly wide range of uses. Reading through the information on your website, I was fascinated by the work that your group is doing and the impact that your research will surely have upon completion. Though I have little prior experience in this field, I believe the knowledge that I gained from my separations class combined with my interest in the subject would make me a strong addition to your lab group. (this is just a sample blurb).
Attached is my resume. Thank you so much for your consideration, and I hope to speak further with you soon.
Best,
Tina Trojan
