We have many outreach opportunities
Read the descriptions of some of the outreach programs we are working on and let us know if you would like to work on them with us!
Develope Virtual Lesson Plans
WChE and other USC students have begun developing lesson plans that can be viewed on Zoom or similar virtual platforms. They focus on a particular topic in STEM and cover concepts taught in a variety of high school STEM subjects. By working independently and with high school teachers, you can design engaging lessons that introduce complex topics related to your field or research and give high school students a more in-depth understanding of difficult topics. An example lesson plan will be uploaded below soon and outlines how a high school teacher can use IQMol, a molecular modelling software, and IR spectra to explain how greenhouses gasses can contribute to global warming. While this lesson is particularly fun in that students get to run computational jobs related to the topic, there are endless possibilities about how hands-on learning can take place in virtual environments. If you are interested in developing and testing out a lesson plan on a new topic please fill out the form below and a member of WChE will reach out to support you and work to connect you with interested high school teachers.
Volunteer During Virtual Lessons
WChE and other USC students are also planning to attend classes with high school students and help them work through lesson plans developed by our team. If you would be interested in volunteering for one of these events, please fill out the form below. Currently, the first lesson plan that we will deploy uses IQMol, a molecular modelling software. To prepare for this lesson, we will be offering an 1-2 hour mini course on molecular modelling that you can attend if you want to volunteer. If you are unsure about volunteering but would like to attend the mini course, fill out the form below and indicate your interests in the comments. Once we have a small group of volunteers together, we will arrange a time for the mini course. No prior knowledge is required for this lesson plan and we will email volunteers as new lesson plans become available!
Develop Webinars or Website Content for High School Students Interested in STEM
To encourage high school students to consider STEM careers, WChE is developing Webinars and Resource Guides aimed at explaining the inner workings of higher education. If you are a student at USC interested in STEM, you have valuable insight and life experiences that we would like to pool and present to younger students. While our initial plan is to cover topics such as choosing a major, applying to colleges, talking to college professors, and finding scholarships and research opportunities, we would love to hear your ideas about what would have helped you as a high school student or what topics you could help develop and deploy as part of this effort. If you are interested in providing your perspectives or would like to volunteer to create some content pages fill out the form to the right. We look forward to working with you!
